Aging vaudeville vet Pete Monahan (Jack Oakie) and his devoted offspring, Jimmy (Donald O'Connor) and Patsy (Peggy Ryan), sing and dance their way through a dandy repertoire of golden oldies in this backstage musical. In addition to its tale of filial love, THE MERRY MONAHANS also concerns itself with relationships of the romantic variety, as Pete woos a reluctant old flame (Rosemary De Camp), while Jimmy becomes involved with her singer daughter (Ann Blyth). The film earned an Oscar nomination for its score. Songs: "Lovely," "Beautiful to Look At," "We're Having a Wonderful Time," "Impersonations," "Stop Foolin"' (Irving Bibo, Don George), "Isle d'Amour" (Earl Carroll, Leo Edwards), "When You Wore a Tulip" (Jack Mahoney, Percy Wenrich), "What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For?" (Howard Johnson, Joseph McCarthy, James V. Monaco), "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody" (Sam Lewis, Joe Young, Jean Schwartz), "Rose Room" (Harry Williams, Art Hickman), "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" (Joseph McCarthy, Harry Carroll), "In My Merry Oldsmobile" (Vincent Bryan, Gus Edwards), "I Hate to Lose You" (Grant Clarke, Archie Gottler). leave a comment
