Writers Seaton and House rewrote this play to fit the talents of comedian Benny. A friendly lawyer with a tightwad image, he is convinced by his valet, Anderson, to become meaner and business will boom. Benny agrees and soon the bucks start rolling in. But his girl, Lane, doesn't like the new Benny personality and dumps him. After a highly publicized photo of Benny taking candy from a baby he's dubbed "The Meanest Man in the World" by the New York City papers. But all is righted thanks to Lane's father, Briggs. It is refreshing to see Anderson play a black role that was at least the equal of his white boss. Anderson was a notable exception to Hollywood's treatment of blacks in the movies of the era. leave a comment
