Made for BBC, THE MCGUFFIN is a hopeless picture that tries to combine mystery with comedy and a tribute to Alfred Hitchcock and fails on all three counts. With a REAR WINDOW theme as a jumping-off place, Paul Hatcher (Charles Dance) is an older film critic who lives in an area where he can see what's happening in the other flats. He is so deeply involved with his work that we are not sure if what he sees is actual or the product of his movie imagination. After watching a film made in Japan, Hatcher looks across the courtyard to see Cio-Cio San being throttled to death. But is it real or is it memory? The plot spools out to reveal that some filthy pictures have been taken of a local top politico, and he wants to get them back before they are grist for the London newspapers' mills. The little fun in the movie comes from the satire of film and critics. There are more red herrings here than in a Russian fish store; they have been jammed into the story because there isn't enough narrative to carry the slim plot line. leave a comment
