Made for BBC, THE MCGUFFIN is a hopeless picture that tries to combine mystery with comedy and a tribute to Alfred Hitchcock and fails on all three counts. With a REAR WINDOW theme as a jumping-off place, Paul Hatcher (Charles Dance) is an older film critic who lives in an area where he can see what's happening in the other flats. He is so deeply involved with his work that we are not sure if what he sees is actual or the product of his movie imagination.
