The Mayor Of 44Th Street: Review

After retiring from vaudeville, ex-hoofer Murphy opens up an agency for dance bands. He decides to play social worker as well, hiring a group of street kids so they'll have something to do besides hang out on the corner. But after he hires the kids' leader, Downing, he finds nothing but trouble. A former convict that Murphy helps to gain parole, Barthelmess, tries to muscle in on the agency, so he'll have a base for his blackmail operations. Martin's real-life dance band provided much of the music. "When There's a Breeze on Lake Louise" was nominated for an Oscar. Unfortunately that was about it for highlights in what amounted to a mean-spirited picture that had nothing good to say about kids. The performances are okay with Murphy and Shirley having a love story somewhere in the middle of this mess. But the overriding mood of the film is too downbeat to make it worth watching. Songs included "Your Face Looks Familiar," "Heavenly, Isn't He?" "Let's Forget It," "You're Bad For Me," "A Million Miles From Manhattan," and "When There's A Breeze On Lake Louise" (Mort Greene, Harry Revel). leave a comment
