Tight, tense mystery finds Robinson portraying a famous, egotistical New York stage actor whose sister, Astor, is the reigning queen of the same Broadway domain, until she suffers a downward mental spiral and cannot seem to function. Astor is under the undue influence of her husband, Calhern. When Calhern vanishes without a trace and without reason, Astor's mental state returns to normal and she is back on top of her game. Calhern reappears (he had been in jail) and Astor starts to crumble once more. Calhern takes Astor to the hotel suite of a producer named Chautard. He wants her to sell her rights in the show so he can have some money with which to operate. Later, Calhern is found murdered in the suite and Astor returns home, a blithering idiot with no memory of how this came to pass. Chautard is nowhere to be found and the police are stymied. One detective, Landau, sticks with the case and uncovers some interesting facts: Calhern may have murdered his first wife and was involved in several illegal activities. Landau searches the room in which Calhern died and finds a false mustache secreted in a Gideon Bible. Landau recalls once seeing a stage play that had a character not unlike the vanished producer in it so he starts looking at actors around town and centers his supicions on Astor's brother, Robinson. Landau does not hide his thoughts of Robinson's guilt and eventually hands the actor the mustache and tells him that he should pay more attention to details if the matter should ever arise again. Robinson, who is obviously the killer, is taken aback by this benign comment. Landau indicates that the earth is a better place for Calhern's passing and now he will close the case and mark it "unsolved." The only other person who knows Robinson is guilty is producer Cortez, but he will not talk because he is in love with Astor and has been waiting for her to get out from under Calhern's thumb. Robinson had to enlist Cortez's aid when he used the latter's office to make the change of clothes that allowed him to disguise himself as the mythical Chautard. Astor, now starring in a hit play, has her happiness compounded when Cortez proposes and she accepts. Hard to believe that the censors allowed this to get past them, since Robinson's character gets away with murder without suffering any retribution. EGR has a good time hamming it up, and the entire cast seems to be enjoying the proceedings. leave a comment
