Ford stars in this taut western as one of the soldiers defending the Alamo against Santa Ana's forces. When it is decided that the men will draw straws and the winner will try to escape to warn the soldiers' families of the impending danger, Ford is chosen and becomes the only survivor of the massacre. When he reaches his family's home, he finds that they, too, have been slaughtered, as have all the other families. Ford is labeled a coward, having run out on the brave soldiers who gave their lives at the Alamo. Rather than defend himself, Ford remains stoical until he can find out who is responsible for the deaths of the families. He discovers that Jory, together with a group of men disguised as Mexican soldiers, did the killings. Ford has trouble finding support, especially from rigid army lieutenant O'Brian. The only person who believes in him is Adams, who does her best to comfort Ford after the loss of his wife. Bent on revenge, Ford hunts down Jory and his men. THE MAN FROM THE ALAMO, while less interesting than Boetticher's "Ranown" films (scripted by Arthur Kennedy and starring Randolph Scott from 1956-60), is notable as a precursor to those pictures. Ford, while less rugged than Scott, shows early signs of the typical Boetticher hero. "The essence of the hero," according to Jim Kitses in his study of Boetticher in Horizons West, "is the knowledge that action is both gratuitous and essential. Revenge is meaningless since the wife is dead; yet it is necessary because it is evidence of a way of life that the hero embodies." This description also bears resemblance to another character Ford played in 1953--the tough policeman in THE BIG HEAT bent on avenging the murder of his wife. leave a comment
