At the close of WW I, Sgt. Jocko Wilson (Charles Laughton), a former prizefighter, leaves singer Aggie Dawlins (Binnie Barnes) at an English dock and returns to Australia with two Belgian orphans in tow, raising them as his own. The girl (played as an adult by Donna Reed) is sent to private school, while the boy (Richard Carlson) becomes the Australian lightweight boxing champion. Using his winnings, they buy an estate and convert it into a hotel. Years later, Aggie--now rich, but still bitter over having been dumped--appears and wins possession of the struggling hotel in a card game. But as WW II begins she and Jocko rekindle their romance, and his "kids," who have long been afraid of their attraction to each other, learn that they aren't related. leave a comment
