Life in Haiti under the murderous Duvalier regime, circa 1960, as seen through the eyes of an intelligent child. When her father (Francois Latour) is forced into exile, 8-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Zubar) is left behind in Papa Doc's Haiti under the care of her
indomitable grandmother (Toto Bissanthe). Director-writer Raoul Peck offers a carefully structured story in which the mundane trials and pleasures of childhood are juxtaposed with the reality of political terror. Jean-Michel Martial is appropriately chilling as a Tontons Macoutes enforcer.
