The Luckiest Man In The World: Review

Sam Posner (Philip Bosco), who was 10 minutes too late to catch a plane that crashed and left no survivors, is inspired to reassess his life as a result of this miraculous near-miss. Bosco is very convincing as Sam, the rich, hard-nosed garment factory owner, who, in the film's first five minutes, is shown trying to dodge a union representative and getting nasty with his wife (Doris Belack), his mistress (Joanne Camp), a dressmaker, and his chaffeur (Arthur French). After avoiding the crash, Sam tries to figure out why he was spared. Not unlike Ebenezer Scrooge, Sam then sets out to right all the wrongs he's committed. The people around him are not convinced, however, leading to some ironic reactions. Sam's need to express his "new self" makes for some very funny moments, as well as for some quite poignant ones. Writer-director Frank Gilroy's script is good; unfortunately, his direction is not. The lead actors are all very accomplished, but their performances are flawed by Gilroy's inability or unwillingness to control them, while the film as a whole also suffers from a sense of timing that is not quite cinematic and which proves distracting. leave a comment
