Codirected by Volker Schlondorff and Margarethe von Trotta, this adaptation of the Heinrich Boll novel capably depicts the author's themes and structure on-screen. The title character (Angela Winkler), a housekeeper and model citizen, suddenly finds herself the victim of an unorthodox police investigation and media assault after a brief affair with a bank-robbing anarchist (Jurgen Prochnow) who is wanted by the police.
