The Living Corpse

1937, Movie, NR, 82 mins

Released in Paris in 1937, THE LIVING CORPSE is yet another disappointment from one of France's greatest directors of silent films. In this Tolstoy tale, a public prosecutor decides to commit suicide so that his unfaithful wife can be with her lover. The man is saved from his demise and decides to enter the army, but is presumed by everyone to be dead. His wife, now engaged to her lover, is hauled to jail for her husband's murder but is released when he turns up later. She pleads with him to come back to her, but he ignores her and walks off. She vows to await his return. Notable mainly for the early appearance of Signoret, who received an Oscar for ROOM AT THE TOP...
