This is a wonderful Shirley Temple picture set in the South during the Civil War. Temple tries to keep the plantation afloat with the help of the tap-dancing Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. When her mother falls ill, Temple's father, John Boles, tries to sneak through enemy lines to see his wife. Union troops catch him and arrest him as a spy. Jack Holt, a Union colonel, helps Boles escape, but Boles is caught again and sentenced to die. Temple takes her appeal all the way to the top and drops in on President Lincoln. In one of her most captivating scenes, she appeals to "Honest Abe" while sharing an apple with him. They chat for a bit, exchange patriotic speeches and finally Lincoln guarantees Boles' safety. The movie includes the song, "Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms" (Thomas Moore and Matthew Locke), and a great duet with "Bojangles" Robinson, "Polly Wolly Doodle." leave a comment
