Disney Studios employed a neorealist filmmaking approach in this enjoyable little film, casting Spanish nonactors (with the exception of Joseph Calleia) and shooting entirely on location. The story is simple but effective: Pablito (Andres Velasquez), a young boy, grows fond of a horse his nasty stepfather is training through torture. The horse's owner, a general, orders that it be destroyed after it throws his daughter. Pablito steals the animal and runs away, seeking refuge with a padre (Calleia). Through numerous travails, which include the horse's life being threatened in a bull ring and the ongoing efforts of the general to have the horse destroyed, boy and beast continue to show their devotion to each other. Filmed in both Spanish and English, THE LITTLEST OUTLAW includes one scene that doesn't fit the Disney mold--in footage taken from real life, bullfighter Pepe Ortiz is gored by a wild bull. That scene notwithstanding, this is a fine film for kids and a top-notch example of what Disney could do on a limited budget. leave a comment
