Rodgers plays an orphaned Kentucky teenager who flees the home of his brutal guardian and eventually winds up living with kindly schoolteacher Dix and his family. He soon falls in love with Dix's daughter Patten, but their romance is interrupted by the Civil War in which Rodgers
volunteers to fight. After the war, a much wiser and more mature Rodgers returns to build a future with Patten. This is pleasant without being too maudlin.
