Quick gangster spoof starring Robinson in a role satirizing the parts he'd been playing for real. This was Robinson's first comedic effort, and he proved he could handle it well. Robinson is a Chicago beer magnate about to go bust because Roosevelt has been elected and Prohibition has been repealed. Rather than find new illegal ways to make a buck, he decides to pull up stakes and move to Santa Barbara and a new life dedicated to the proposition that all polo ponies are created equal. Having left ChiTown with lots of money and very little class, he attempts to crack the Montecito moguls, but they see right through him. Vinson, a wealthy young woman, takes him to meet her family, whom Robinson thinks is the upper crust. They turn out to be connivers and wind up defrauding Robinson out of his sudsy fortune. They sell him stocks, and he inadvertently takes the rap for the scheme. Before he can be convicted, he talks the district attorney, Marston, into letting him try to regain the money. Now he contacts his gang in Chicago and institutes "The Chicago Plan," and his cohorts strong-arm the con men into getting the money back. Along the way, he meets and falls for Astor, a poor girl in whose heavily mortgaged house he's been living. After the money is retrieved, Robinson gets his engagement ring back from Vinson, and it is presumed he will present it to Astor. Robinson is wonderful as the bumbling gangster out of his element, and when he tries to blend in with the rich, horsey set, you'll laugh until tears flow. At times, the comedy gets heavy-handed, but there's enough good fun to satisfy everyone. Good technical work by all concerned and a machine gun script from Lord and Mizner set this apart from many of the other gangster spoofs of the time, such as RACKETY RAX and WHAT! NO BEER? leave a comment
