Based on the novel by espionage writer Gardner, this Bond-style feature finds Taylor as a playboy who's afraid to fly and gets sick at the sight of blood. He is not the spy type but he did save Howard's life during WW II and that is good enough for Howard. He sets up his old comrade with expensive penthouses, cars, and women, eventually springing on Taylor that his mission is to be an assassin for hire. Taylor wants nothing to do with this and hires someone to do the dirty work for him. The movie is complete with a political assassination, pretty counterspies, and a climactic finish where Taylor pilots a jet plane after knocking out its hijacker. The plot has more holes than Swiss cheese but the pace is swift. In parts, this is funny, but it often seems to be amusing its players more than the audience. However, slick production values and Taylor's off-beat performance give this some tongue-in-cheek charm. leave a comment
