In 1865, Argentina sets up a lighthouse staffed by Rey, Ranieri and Douglas, an American drifter. When an unusual schooner comes near the lighthouse, Rey and Ranieri go out to investigate. They are brutally murdered by the ship's crew, a band of pirates led by Brynner, out to take over the lighthouse to attract ships for their wicked purposes. Douglas is captured but escapes. Soon the pirates are in business, taking over a ship carrying Eggar, an English noblewoman. She is raped and murdered, and Douglas avenges her by blowing up the pirate ship. He meets Brynner in a one-on-one battle and the pirate falls to his death after the lighthouse catches fire. Overlong, dull and sadistic, this is a film too fanciful for adults and too gory for kids. The direction is weak, taking little interest in anything but the brutality. Brynner is the only standout here, mostly for his hambone performance. leave a comment
