Abel Gance's film biography of one of the world's greatest composers focuses on what Gance saw to be his only true loves--music and Holt. Gance views Beethoven as being one of the great men of history, the very embodiment of music. Baur is superb in the lead role and adds believability to
the genius' character. The most stirring scene is silent: the composer's deafness is made manifest as the visuals convey the ringing of a blacksmith's anvil, the singing of birds, the chattering of villagers, and a street musician's music, all unheard. Unfortunately, however, this picture was
never given the attention that his classic NAPOLEON received and sits disintegrating, awaiting restoration.
