An admirably scripted western from Sturges which casts Taylor as a former bank robber turned marshal. Years before donning the badge, Taylor was a member of Widmark's gang, but after robbing a local savings and loan he took the money and ran. When news reaches Taylor that Widmark is the guest of honor at a necktie party, the marshal arranges to have his life spared. Widmark, still holding a grudge, is less than amiable to Taylor. He and his henchmen kidnap Taylor and his girl, forcing them into the Sierras, where the stolen money was buried.
