Veidt, the hulking zombie from THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, is an older magician who has fallen in love with his young assistant, Philbin. She does not return the feelings though and instead has romantic feelings for Fenton, a thief who has become Veidt's pupil. MacKay is another of the magician's assistants who becomes jealous of the young couple's romance and exposes it all to the magician. Fenton kills MacKay and subsequently commits suicide at his murder trial. The plot is standard crime of passion material, but strong direction and some imaginative and stylish camera work give the film excellent boosting. For the film's Hungarian distribution, an unknown actor named Bela Lugosi dubbed Veidt's lines. leave a comment
