The Last Mile: Review

This remake of the 1932 prison movie classic is inferior to its predecessor in most respects, but does feature a host of excellent supporting portrayals and one of Rooney's better adult performances, in the role that made stars of Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable on the stage and that Preston Foster played on the screen. Death row inmates wait for their time to come, slowly going crazy (Constantine is already there), endlessly tormented by sadistic guard Barry until the day he makes the fatal mistake of leaning against Rooney's cell. The hardened killer, with nothing to lose, strangles Barry and uses the guard's keys and gun to free the other inmates and capture more of the guards. Priest Overton, who had been rebuffed by Rooney when he tried to talk to the convict earlier, is also taken hostage and is the only one not terrified by their predicament. One by one the convicts fall victim to the guns that surround the cellblock, and when Rooney sees that his demands are never going to be met, he ends his wait for death by stepping into a hail of bullets. A powerful film, grim and tense. Former B-western star Barry's sadistic guard and Overton's compassionate, fearless priest stand out in a fine cast composed mostly of people from the stage, and although Rooney tends to chew the scenery on occasion, it doesn't seem too out of place given the extraordinary circumstances in which he finds himself. leave a comment
