This remake of the 1932 prison movie classic is inferior to its predecessor in most respects, but does feature a host of excellent supporting portrayals and one of Rooney's better adult performances, in the role that made stars of Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable on the stage and that Preston Foster played on the screen.
