This is a chilling look at Taylor as a sadistic buffalo hunter who kills purely for the enjoyment of killing and hunts down defenseless Indians he accuses of stealing his horses. He teams up with Granger, a soft-spoken former buffalo hunter, but the two personalities clash. Taylor's sadistic nature forces him to seek revenge on Granger; he waits in ambush, but dies from exposure. The frozen face that serves as the picture's last shot is a fitting metaphor for the character Taylor portrays. The film was shot entirely in Custer National Park, offering some stunning scenery. The shots of the buffalo being mowed down come from actual footage of buffalo being shot in order to keep herd size controlled. The script's in-depth look into the motivating forces behind the characters is complemented by striking performances. Well-paced direction helps to keep the movie from lapsing into even a moment of dullness. leave a comment
