This self-consciously amusing slasher film stars cult favorite Munro as an actress with a cult following who is visiting Cannes for the film festival. Also visiting the Riviera is Spinell, a New York taxi driver and her most devoted fan, who is convinced that she can be a great actress under his direction. When he invades her hotel room while she is taking a shower and makes his offer, she tries to toss him out. He smashes the bottle of champagne he brought with him and holds the jagged edge up to her throat. She manages to escape and runs through the crowded lobby wrapped only in a towel, with Spinell in pursuit. The festival crowd thinks it's a publicity stunt and applauds; Spinell, taken off guard, stops and makes a hesitant bow. His psychotic pursuit of his idol claims more victims (including one unfortunate who is decapitated with a chainsaw) before he himself meets a messy end. A nonsensical conclusion reveals that the whole film is something Spinell is showing to his mother (played by actor Spinell's real mom). Shot at the 1981 Cannes Festival, the film includes scenes with stars like Kris Kristofferson, Karen Black, and Marcello Mastroianni making unwitting appearances. Munro (previously harassed by Spinell in the despicable MANIAC [1981]), and producer Hamilton (her real-life husband) were unable to come to New York for dubbing sessions, so their voices were replaced by those of Americans. Since the release of this film, both Spinell and his mother have died. (she in 1987 and he in early 1989). Sleazy fun for fans of blood and bad acting. leave a comment
