Williams returns to his boyhood village in Wales in the hope of buying out the entire district for use in a water-reservoir project. This is his own revenge against the village which had him exiled as a thief. Due to resistance from Evans, he fails at his land deal, so he tries to burn
the village down. He is stopped by Burton and killed in a fight. Evans then floods the village herself to conceal Williams' body, protecting her stepson, Burton. The story is well developed, with even and subtle direction. The cast are equally effective in their portrayals of modest Welsh
