Like THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, this low-budget horror film is built around "real" footage purportedly taken by amateur filmmakers who run into something very nasty in the woods. The conceit behind filmmakers Stefan Avalos and Lance Weiler's picture is that it's a documentary made by David Leigh (David Beard). His subject is the murders of Steven Avkast (Avalos) and Locus Wheeler (Weiler), hosts of a hokey cable show called "Fact or Fiction," and their soundman Rein Clackin (Rein Clabbers). The three were deep in New Jersey's desolate Pine Barrens taping a show about the legendary Jersey Devil, and the fourth member of their team, self-proclaimed psychic Jim Suerd (Jim Seward), was convicted of butchering them. But Leigh thinks there's more to the story, especially after he comes into possession of several hours worth of mangled videotape that may reveal what really happened, if only it can be restored. Avalos and Weiler have suggested that BLAIR's Eduardo Sanchez and Dan Myrick might have drawn some illicit inspiration from their film, which was made over roughly the same time period. In fact, Avalos and Weiler's film looks less like THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT than Curse of the Blair Witch, Myrick and Sanchez's "In Search Of..." style TV mockumentary. BROADCAST includes the expected talking-head interviews, "found" and faux newsreel footage, as well as stylized close ups of maps, tape reels, a computer keyboard, a falling house of cards and the like, which suggest that Avalos and Weiler have more than a passing acquaintance with Erroll Morris' THIN BLUE LINE. It's nicely put together (especially given the obviously low budget) and occasionally creepy, despite the rather juvenile voice-over ruminations about media-made perceptions. But it's all undermined by a truly ridiculous ending: What were they thinking? leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
