Set in California shortly after the Spanish-American War, THE LASH stars Barthelmess as a Mexican rancher who becomes a sort of Latin Robin Hood in his efforts to avenge the injustices suffered by his people. He battles the evil American land commissioner and defends the virtue of the beautiful Astor. He eventually succeeds in delivering his precious cattle to the commissioner--in the form of a stampede which wrecks the corrupt bureaucrat's office. Barthelmess nevertheless collects what he is due. The film was meant to be a starring vehicle for the dashing Barthelmess, so other roles are diminished. Some suspension of disbelief may be required to accept Barthelmess in western garb. Directed with little conviction, THE LASH it should be noted, is surprisingly anti-American for its time. This early western was also part of an experiment in widescreen projection by Warner Bros., called Vitascope by this particular studio. The other major studios also attempted their initial ventures into the larger format in westerns around this same time. leave a comment
