The Land Before Time Vii: The Stone Of Cold Fire: Review

Littlefoot the Apatosaurus spots a falling meteorite and questions disbelieving tribal elders about this mythical "stone of cold fire." Abetted by Cera the Triceratops, Ducky the Saurolophus, Petrie the Pterodactyl, Spike the Stegosaurus, Littlefoot doesn't accept the patronizing dismissal of the adult dinosaurs and ponders venturing to the Smoking Mountains to verify what he's witnessed. From the sidelines, Petrie's uncle Pterano hopes to acquire the unusual rock, which allegedly possesses magical powers. Encouraging the kiddies, Pterano hopes to obtain the stone in order to seize control of the herd. Two visiting "far-walkers" help Litlefoot's gang out of assorted scrapes along the way, including Ducky's abduction, geyser eruptions, and literal cliffhangers, but their origins remain a mystery. Although popular interest in prehistoric beasts is at an all-time high, watching this saccharine I'm-Okay-You're-Okay adventure will be an Ice Age experience for grown-ups with a low cuteness threshold. Innocuous tunes are dropped into the action with little purpose or effect, and homespun messages hammer home the value of friendship, but isn't the film's gooey amiability a bit out of place, given the kill-or-be-killed environment? leave a comment --Robert Pardi
