The Lady Vanishes

This remake of the classic Hitchcock mystery is a far cry from its predecessor, lacking the style and subtle humor of the master. Lansbury plays the nanny who mysteriously disappears while on board a European passenger train. Gould and Shepherd are the couple who search for the missing lady, uncovering a German plot and falling in love in the process. You would think this plot would be impossible to tarnish, but tarnish it is all that director Page is able to do. Flat direction and a lame cast, most of whom are hard to take seriously, create a mishmash of styles somewhere between comedy and suspense. The scenic photography is the film's best offering, but hey, anyone with a working knowledge of a camera can take picture-postcard shots of the gorgeous Austrian landscape. Fans of Cybill Shepherd may want to check this one out, but true Hitchcock fans will be disappointed. leave a comment
