Belgian actor Gravet, long-tenured in French films, makes his American film debut in this tale as a deposed former monarch who falls in love with Blondell, a chorus girl at the Folies Bergere. Horton is the monarch's long-suffering factotum and is as droll as can be. The film maintains a good level of farce, with some nice musical numbers including "For You" and "On the Rue de la Paix." Things drop off toward the end, but it's still good fun to watch. The usually brassy Blondell performed her role in an uncharacteristically restrained and sympathetic manner. Wyman is seen here in one of her first featured parts. Prolific director LeRoy made his debut as producer here; the following year he defied the Hollywood conventions of nepotism--his wife was the daughter of a studio mogul--and switched his allegiance from Warner Bros. to MGM. The film did well at the box office. It was most timely; three months prior to its release, King Edward VIII of Great Britain abdicated his throne to wed a commoner, divorcee Wallis Warfield Simpson. leave a comment
