KING KONG featured a giant gorilla, GODZILLA had an enormous lizard, so the only terrifying animal left for Ken Curtis to make a film about was that evil little creature, the shrew! Curtis served as both producer and supporting player in this so-bad-it's-good feature. Lumet--real-life father of director Sidney--is an evil scientist who creates a formula that makes the tiny shrew resemble something like a collie with a shrew-mask. During a storm the little devils get loose and go after Best and his girl friend Goude, who was Miss Universe of 1957. Good dumb fun, it was paired in production and released on a double feature with THE GIANT GILA MONSTER, another little-to-big animal adventure by the same crew. Curtis, who had served as a B Western singing cowboy, returned to his old genre soon after this film, playing Festus on TV's "Gunsmoke." Director Kellogg had previously done second-unit work with John Ford and Howard Hawks before turning to direction himself. In this piece of amiable idiocy, the taming of the shrews is accomplished by means of a tank-like vehicle crafted by the brilliant Best from old storage barrels. leave a comment
