This unexceptional boxing comedy stars Pat O'Brien as the manager of Homer Baston (Wayne Morris), a witless fighter who believes his mother and the woman in James McNeill Whistler's famous portrait are one and the same. In order to get the reluctant Homer to put the gloves on again, a drunken kleptomaniac (May Robson) is brought in to pose as his mother, and she brings along a Hell's Kitchen buddy (Stanley Fields) to act the role of Dad. A boxing film without a big fight is like a Thanksgiving without a turkey, and former light heavyweight champion "Slapsie" Maxie Rosenbloom plays Homer's opponent in this one. Lewis Seiler's direction is competent and the film is well paced, but ultimately it's KO'd by its insipid plot, based on a story by the usually reliable Dalton Trumbo. leave a comment
