Francis is married to millionaire Kolker but discovers that her supposed ex-husband Owsley never got the divorce he said he would. Now he wants $50,000 to keep the whole affair under wraps. She confesses to her sister-in-law Ware and heads down to Havana to get a quickie divorce. But Kolker has been suspicious of his wife and hires private detective Brent to follow her, not explaining their relationship. Brent becomes friendly with Francis and they spend a good deal of time together. Owsley follows Francis to Havana, as she hoped. He is not an American citizen and she is hoping her wealthy sister-in-law can pull some strings to deny him re-entry. But Ware hears about Kolker's dealings and tells him the whole story. He flies off to Cuba and sends Brent a telegram notifying the detective of his impending arrival. Meanwhile, Francis tells Brent her story and he levels with her--also revealing that in the course of his work he has fallen in love with her. Owsley arrives but Brent succeeds in getting rid of him. But in Owsley's haste to flee, he falls to his death off a hotel balcony. Kolker arrives at last but Francis tells him off, saying she is through with him. Besides, they aren't legally wed. The film ends with her and Brent beginning a life together. Though advertised as "The only picture that keeps abreast of 1933's changing moral standards!" the film is little more than soap opera with some fine acting. Francis had achieved enormous success in TROUBLE IN PARADISE and CYNARA while on loan to other studios (as well as some excellent teamings with William Powell including ONE WAY PASSAGE for Warners), but the executives at Warners overlooked her natural comedic gifts and stuck her in low-quality films like this. Her basic duty is to go through the motions and serve as a clothes horse, but Francis is too good an actress to allow herself to be reduced to such twaddle. She gives a fine performance, overcoming the weak script and limited support from Brent. leave a comment
