The Keep: Review

A minor disaster. Director Michael Mann (THIEF, television's "Miami Vice" and "Crime Story") presents a fantastic-looking movie, filled with great production values and lush cinematography. Unfortunately, these are combined with a totally incoherent narrative, punctuated by incredibly inept performances from usually fine actors (Robert Prosky, who was so good in THIEF, is an embarrassment here, as is Ian McKellen). The film is set in Eastern Europe during WW II, but just what is going on there is hard to say. The plot has something to do with a castle in the Carpathian Mountains that possesses a powerful, evil force that sucks up every Nazi it comes across and spits out their bloody entrails. Called by psychic impulses (or something like that), a mysterious traveler (Scott Glenn) arrives to do battle with the evil force. THE KEEP is one of the more visually interesting horror films of the 1980s, making its complete narrative weakness all the more frustrating. leave a comment
