The Invisible Ray: Review
Boris Karloff, by means of his time and space travel machine, is able to pinpoint a meteor that landed in Africa. With the help of fellow scientist Bela Lugosi, Karloff puts together an expedition to retrieve the meteor, which contains "Radium X," a substance more powerful than radium. Upon finding the meteor, Karloff is contaminated by radiation and discovers that he kills whatever he touches. Lugosi comes up with a short-term antidote, but the radiation is making Karloff go mad. Thinking that Lugosi and others from the expedition have cheated him out of the limelight by presenting the meteor to the Scientific Congress, Karloff kills them and almost kills his wife, Frances Drake. Her mother, Violet Kemble-Cooper, destroys the antidote, so the scientist bursts into flames and jumps through a window to his death. John P. Fulton's special effects are a standout. (He also did the special effects for the INVISIBLE MAN series.) Director Lambert Hillyer was known primarily for westerns; his only other horror film was DRACULA'S DAUGHTER (1936).
