An underrated science-fiction film about young Timmie Merrinoe (Richard Eyer) and his relationship with the robot that becomes a kind of surrogate father for him. Dr. Merrinoe (Philip Abbott), the genius who is Timmie's actual father, invents a supercomputer that soon begins to act on its own, taking over the "conscience" of Robby the Robot (a refugee from FORBIDDEN PLANET). Timmie puts an end to the chaos by smashing the machine that his father can't bring himself to destroy. The picture's strength lies in its point of view, as--a la Steven Spielberg's E.T.--it sympathetically observes events from Timmie's perspective, showing the film's adults to be nearly as insensitive as the machines. leave a comment
