This efficiently written, made-for-cable film transfers detective story conventions to the novel context of postal inspection. The premise worked well enough to spawn a follow-up, THE INSPECTORS 2: SHRED OF EVIDENCE (2000). Neophyte postal officer Alex Urbina (Jonathan Silverman) learns the ropes of federal criminal detection from mentor Frank Hughes (Louis Gossett Jr.). Alex's first assignment involves a complicated bombing case: A mail-bomb kills a man and sends his wife into a coma, and the number-one suspect is the couple's estranged son, Drew (Tobias Mehler). Drew is arrested and blames two former sidekicks, Dwayne and Skell. Drew turned state's evidence against ex-friends Dwayne and Skell when they were on trial for murdering two college students, and they vowed revenge from behind bars. But in order to implicate them, Urbina and Hughes establish a link between the prisoners incarcerated duo and lethal parcel. The discover that a local sheriff's son supplied the materials used to build the explosive apparatus and that convicts communicated instructions to an accomplice under the guise of giving car repair instructions. But who will open the next deadly package? Writer Bruce Zimmerman and director Brad Turner generate serious suspense as the postal sleuths pursue blind leads down dead-end streets before finally getting on the right track. The screenplay, inspired by real-life cases, draws viewers into the nitty-gritty of an ongoing inquiry in an unusual context, and detailed depositions alternate with heart-racing moments of suspense. More proficient as a procedural drama than an outright thriller, this sharply written and authoritatively acted film builds to an unsettling climax and make civil service seem positively exciting. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
