Politics and sexuality intersect, with tragic results, in a moody, fascinating melodrama inspired by the construction and discovery of the Berlin Tunnel in the early 1960s. Based on a first-rate spy thriller by Ian McEwan, this overlooked John Schlesinger film features a remarkable performance by Campbell Scott, as a shy Englishman whose personal and political loyalties are subverted by Cold War skullduggery, and a hammy turn by Anthony Hopkins that almost -- but not quite -- derails the whole affair. leave a comment
