The Incredible Sarah

In this digest interpretation of the immortal Sarah Bernhardt, Jackson is required to portray a woman moving from one hysterical crisis to another rather than to present a well-rounded study of Bernhardt's character. Although the set design and photography are interesting, they are not enough to make this film work. We see Bernhardt only up to age 35, well before she lost her leg, a matter too delicate perhaps for the writers' sensibilities. Bernhardt's notorious affairs are also diluted for the PG rating. Ultimately this film has a hard time justifying itself. Everything from directing to music is overdone; and Jackson's role is played too broadly. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. leave a comment
