This film tries to balance horror against morality but ends up shaky at best. Rebar is the only survivor of an ill-fated Saturn expedition. While on his trip, he is touched by some weird space virus that causes his flesh to melt and his palate to crave human flesh. He is pursued by DeBenning and Alldredge, who both want the monster for different reasons. The special effects are all right but not nearly so horrifying as the film purports. Attempts at humanizing Rebar come in the form of contacts he has with a pair of retired old folks and a FRANKENSTEIN-inspired encounter with two little boys. When it makes moral statements, the film is at its best, although that's not saying a whole lot. The dialog is simplistic. Someone should tell the continuity crew that the sun doesn't shine through windows at night. Watch for Demme, an independent director, in a bit part. leave a comment
