The Ice Follies Of 1939: Review

Stewart and Crawford are a husband and wife whose marriage is on thin ice when she gets a Hollywood film contract and he must work in the East. While Stewart is having a tough time finding skating engagements, Crawford is rising fast. To be with her spouse, however, she offers to give up her career. The kind-hearted producer, Stone, does his part to keep the pair together and finds Stewart a job as a film producer. As good as Crawford and Stewart are, they cannot put the lame script on its feet. The film comes to life with a 17-minute Technicolor finale of a Cinderella fantasy performed by the International Ice Follies. Musical numbers include "Loveland in the Wintertime" (Cliff Friend, Dave Franklin), "Something's Gotta Happen Soon" (Arthur Freed, Nacio Herb Brown), "It's All So New to Me" (Bernice Petkere, Marty Symes), "Cinderella Reel," "Blackbirds" (Roger Edens, Franz Waxman). leave a comment
