After directing the humorous and successful MOTEL HELL, Kevin Connor missed the mark with this straightforward haunted-house horror film. In a big house in 1840 Japan a love triangle ends in two murders and a suicide, leaving an adulterous wife, Mako Hattori; her lover, Toshiyuki Sasaki; and her husband, Toshiya Maruyama; to haunt the house forever. When a young American couple, Edward Albert and Susan George, move into the house and are visited by a diplomat friend, Doug McClure, the ghosts take possession of the modern-day inhabitants, and the triangle is reenacted. A Buddhist monk is called in to exorcise the house, but the ghosts return and take over the bodies again, leading to a violent end. The film has more nudity than chills, but it does have some quirky humor, especially in the exorcism scene. leave a comment
