Fine acting exercise. This Bergman discourse on the nature of art and the artist's relation to society is shrouded in the trappings of gothic horror and stars Max von Sydow as Johan Borg, a painter haunted by bad dreams and apparitions while secluded on an island with his pregnant wife, Alma (Liv Ullmann). Both of them experience a series of haunting visions: Johan sees a beautiful boy, a ghost able to walk on walls, and an ancient woman who tears off her face; Alma is approached by a woman (who may or may not be an apparition) who instructs her to read her husband's diary.
