This well-made thriller set in 1890s London stars Lawford as a jewel thief who, along with accomplices Dwyer and Gordon, steals a valuable emerald at a ritzy party. At the same time, though totally unrelated to the theft, a bobby is murdered by a police killer called "the Terror," played by Shaw. The murder complicates the escape of Lawford and company and causes them to come under suspicion of Scotland Yard superintendent, Culver, for both the theft and the killing. Lawford uses his quick wits to keep one step ahead of the law, biding his time until the heat is off and he can dispose of the emerald. But as long as the string of police murders continues, the chase for Lawford is on. As a result, Lawford comes up with a scheme to capture Shaw. It works, but Lawford is sent to prison anyway. A good remake of the 1934 film THE MYSTERY OF MR. X. leave a comment
