Excellent adaptation of the Pinter play for the American Film Theatre series of the early 1970s. The simple plot features Jayston returning to his childhood home with wife Merchant. There he sees his father (Rogers), uncle (Cusack), and his brothers (Holm and Rigby), who are a pimp and boxer, respectively. The small family is held together by volatile fighting, boredom, and ultimate dependency on one another. Each performance is a gem. The individual quirks of each character are well- executed and utterly believable. Hall's direction is sensitive to Pinter's script and to the acting of the ensemble (who all played in the original 1965 stage production). There is a magical chemistry within every frame of this powerful, unforgettable film. leave a comment
