Upon release from prison for a crime she didn't commit, Colbert decides to pose as a fortune teller to enact revenge on Hale, the woman who set her up. Disguised as a gypsy, Colbert kidnaps Hale's granddaughter, Kagno, and plans to raise the child as a thief. She is temporarily distracted from her plan when the town's local gangster, Robinson, and newspaper reporter Newell both fall in love with her. Blinded by her thirst for vengeance, Colbert ignores the men. Soon all are engaged in a game of deceit with Kagno's life hanging in the balance. While this is nothing more than an overly melodramatic crime story, the film is saved by Robinson's complex and energetic performance--his first as a gangster. Bringing many shades to his characterization, Robinson manages to portray an outwardly intimidating hoodlum, who deep down needs to love and be loved. Over the course of the film he has a moment of self-realization and compassion rarely attributed to movie gangsters, especially when the genre was in its infancy, making HOLE IN THE WALL valuable to anyone interested in the genesis of the gangster film. leave a comment
