After discovering a new comet in the heavens and having it named after him, Mt. Jefferson Observatory astronomer Powell becomes so absorbed in tracing what he projects will be its path to a moon collision that he ignores his beautiful bride, Lamarr. Feeling lonely and unloved, Lamarr visits an astrologer who tells her that soon, on a specific day, she will meet a man who has traveled extensively and she will fall in love with him. To make Powell jealous, Lamarr informs him of this prediction. Outraged that his wife could believe in such a silly pseudo-science as astrology, Powell leaves her for a few days and goes to his observatory. Lamarr decides to sit and wait for her mystery man to appear. The big day comes, but nothing happens. That evening she phones Powell and apologizes. He agrees to come home. At the stroke of midnight there is a knock on the door. On the porch is an air raid warden, Craig, who informs Lamarr that she has disobeyed a blackout ordinance. After a brief conversation, Lamarr is shocked to learn that Craig has traveled throughout the world. Her man has arrived. After a bit of mild flirtation, Craig goes to leave and bumps into Powell, who has just arrived home. Suspecting something, Powell requests that air raid warden Craig be transferred to another district. Now having fallen in love with Lamarr, Craig refuses the transfer and, despite Powell's attempts to interfere, Lamarr and the air raid warden continue to cross paths. Afraid he is losing his wife to another man, Powell visits the astrologer who started all the trouble and demands she write a bogus horoscope that predicts his demise. Powell then fakes a terminal illness to gain sympathy, but Lamarr learns the truth. Frustrated and lonely, Powell leaves and returns to his observatory. Realizing that her husband really does love her, Lamarr dumps Craig and renews her marriage to Powell. Basically just a silly situation comedy, THE HEAVENLY BODY is merely an hour and a half of mild amusement. All the principals have been better elsewhere, and the script offers little in the way of clever dialog or screwball situations. In fact, Lamarr was given this inferior project after turning down a chance to star in an adaptation of Pearl S. Buck's Dragon Seed, a role which finally went to Katharine Hepburn. leave a comment
