The Heart Of A Nation

1943, Movie, NR, 111 mins

The story of Occupied France is told in this biography of a Montmarte family that begins during the Franco-Prussian war in 1871 and continues through the Nazi occupation in 1940. Events include Nat's wedding, Raimu's visit to the Moulin Rouge, Morgan's loss of her arm in WW I, and the arrival of the Nazi troops. Real life began to parallel this picture when the Germans ordered the negative and all prints destroyed after viewing it. But the "cinema resistance" saved the film. A copy was smuggled out and buried, a common practice during the Occupation. Henri Langlois and Georges Franju at the Cinematheque Francaise saved literally thousands of films from destruction....
