At this point in film history, the screen western was effectively being killed off by television shows such as
Bonanza and
The Big Valley, but this didn't stop a few stalwarts from trying their best to keep the genre alive. Here, cowboy Calhoun is an old gunman who meets Lauren, a wild
gunslinger who reminds Calhoun of his younger days. After being wounded in a gunfight, Calhoun returns to Sanctuary, a town populated by outlaws and run by him. The rest of the film consists of Calhoun slowly dying from his wound's infection. Unwilling to die in bed, he bullies Lauren into a duel
and dies "with his own kind of dignity," by the younger man's gun. Calhoun...
